The Girls of Gloucestershire

Anonymous

Attend, you lads and lasses, a story you shall hear,
Concerning of the pretty girls who live in Gloucestershire;
They're handsome and they're charming, they're blooming and they're fair,
For there are no girls in England like the girls of Gloucestershire.

Chorus:
For they're handsome and they're charming, they're blooming and they're fair,
You'll find all over Britain's isles no lasses can compare
With the buxom pretty girls who reside in Gloucestershire.

Through England and Ireland, and Scotland I have been,
And over the Welsh mountains where beauty I have seen;
But of all the lasses in the land, I solemnly declare,
There's none that take my fancy like the girls of Gloucestershire.

There's Jane and Sal, and lovely Ann, and pretty Mary too,
There's Betty and Amelia, and bonny black eyed Sue,
There's Martha and Eliza, and Kitty too, so fair;
May happiness attend the pretty girls of Gloucestershire.

Some can brew, and some can bake, some can mend and sew,
Some can knit, some can spin, while some are plaiting straw,
Some can tie the velvet band all around their pretty hair;
Sure, you never saw such lasses as the girls of Gloucestershire.

Some can use the fork and rake, and some can drive the plough,
And some can sing like nightingales while milking of the cow,
Some can dance the hornpipe when they do go to the fair,
What sweet and lovely creatures are the girls of Gloucestershire.

Some can rock the cradle and sing lullaby all day -
"O John, false hearted Johnny, you've stole my heart away."
Silk scarfs and dandy ribbons to tie up their lovely hair,
What sweet and charming creatures are the girls of Gloucestershire.

Poor buxom blades of England, if you wish to change your life,
Pray, hasten unto Gloucestershire, and choose yourself a wife;
And when you're tired of wedlock's band, come bumpers full to share,
And drink a health unto the girls of Gloucestershire

This is traditional folk song collected in Wiltshire by Wiltshire poet Alfred Williams.
