Aldrich was born in Portsmouth New Hampshire. He did not go to college, but became a journalist in New York instead. In 1865 he went back to New England and edited magazines, including the Atlantic Monthly. He wrote poetry and short stories and traveled around the world, but his favourite place was probably his house "The Crags' near Tenants Harbor in Maine.
