Poems by Nicholas Michell (1807 - 1880)

Nicholas Michell was born in Truro in Cornwall. He lived in Cornwall and London all his life. His imagination took him round the world however, and his long poem "Ruins of Many Lands" was a great success. He was a pioneer of poetic geography and thanks to him many of the world's most remarkable historic sites have been mapped in poetry for the Poetry Atlas.

From Roman Ruins like these, to Mayan ruins in the Yucatan, to the ruins of Greece, Iran, Egypt, Babylonia and India, there was nothing that Nicholas Michell liked better than a good ruin; unless it was writing poems about ruins.
