Far More Than a Breeze

R. Lincoln Harris

Gentle winds blowing in
from Key West and Havana
far away from Sanibel Island
brought comfort and delight
to residents and tourists alike.

Yet Nature retained a powerful force
that was understood vaguely,
only in an abstract sense,
or perhaps not even at all.

All of that changed forever
on 28 September 2022.

Those gentle Gulf breezes
may have already returned,
but Sanibel’s community
will not experience them again
in quite the same way.

In late September 2022, Hurricane Ian struck the Gulf Coast of Florida with winds of 150 mph. Sanibel Island was one of many coastal communities that suffered extensive damage.

Poetry Atlas has many other poems about Florida.
