Burton Waterfalls

Hilaire Belloc

When open skies renew the year,
And yaffle under Gumber calls,
It's because the days are near
When open skies renew the year,
That under Burton waterfalls
The little pools are amber clear,
And yaffle, yaffle, yaffle, yaffle,
yaffle under Gumber calls.

[Excerpt from The Four Men - A Farrago]

The "waterfalls" are really just the weir at Burton Mill Pond.

The Gumber is an extra-parochial tract of land in West Sussex.

"Yaffle" is a local Sussex name for the green woodpecker.
