Paris - Statue of Gambetta

Hope Mirrlees

           Gambetta
A red stud in the button-hole of his frock-coat
The obscene conjugal tutoiment
Mais c’est logique

The Esprit Français leaning over him,
        Whispering
        Secrets
    exquisite        significant
    fade            plastic

[Extract]

The statue of Léon Gambetta used to stand outside the Louvre on Rue de Rivoli. The metal parts of the monument were melted down in 1941.

The remaining part of the statue is now in the Square Square Edouard Vaillant.

You can read other extracts from this lengthy poem by Hope Mirrlees on Poetry Atlas.
