Tunbridge Wells

John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester

At five this morn, when Phoebus raised his head
From Thetis' lap, I raised myself from bed,
And mounting steed, I trotted to the waters
The rendesvous of fools, buffoons, and praters,
Cuckolds, whores, citizens, their wives and daughters.

This is just the first short stanza of this much longer satire.

Royal Tunbridge Wells was a popular spa town in the Restoration period.

Poetry Atlas has many other poems about Kent.
