Entering the Latin School, now the Johan de Witt Gymnasium,
the oldest in the Netherlands,
I think of Kennedy’s Latin Primer,
Civis Romanus
and all those journeys we slogged through
in Caesar’s Gallic Wars.
Like a school excursion into a dead language,
it all seemed long ago.
