Lake Vostok

Bruce McIntyre

Creep deep into the noisiest silence of the earth:
our creeping is a scratch, an insect prick,
what sleeps
still lives but nothing nothing on so vast
a scale of life outlives our passing, we
shall hasten your inevitable liquefaction.
You don’t own time down there or there
upon the planet’s frozen pate –
nor rock nor wave now blocks our penetration,
economies of scale are ours to know
and yours to find out – out there
we’ll bend your neck like ants
upon the giant meat, pin
your life beneath the withering sun.
