The Funeral of Music

J.R. Solonche

Tonight I went to the funeral of music.

It was at Carnegie Hall,

a performance of Faure’s Requiem

and Mozart’s Requiem.

It wasn’t really the funeral of music.

But it could have been.

Perhaps it should have been.

Classical music, after all, has been

dying a slow, agonizing death for years.

Surely it will happen this way

when it finally happens.

Music singing itself to sleep.

A small band of mourners.

Gray haired. Dozing off.

Coughing.

Carnegie Hall is one of the world's most renowned classical music concert halls. It is on 7th Avenue in New York.
