I saw a young woman lean over
the edge and lose an earring in
the water of the water lily pond.
I wanted to go over to help her find it,
but I could see the water was deep,
above my waist, and it was murky,
and the bottom was probably just
mud and muck, and I didn’t feel
that I wanted to plunge my hand
down there into that just to feel
around for a stupid earring, so
I didn’t go over to help, but later,
as I was leaving, I saw one hell
of a good-looking guy in his twenties
or so wearing his Brooklyn Botanic
Garden horticulturist’s khakis up
to his waist in water lily pond water.
Ah,
love in bloom!
