La Jeune Fille Catholique

Anthony James Leahy

occupe mes pensées.
There is a special kind of air:
savouring in its flavour whilst
walking on the stairway…
I pause to rest upon its arm
as it stretches out to greet me;
inviting me to take in the beauty
of the still water that it cradles
within its grip.

I light a cigarette and smile
as butterflies chatter and dance
within a free spirit gentle beat.
Pondering I wonder why
the waters should wish to flow
in an opposite direction from that of heaven…
perhaps heaven was only a figment,
and the vibrancy for life itself
was the water's singular attraction.
