Brick Lane

Yasemin Balandi

Star of David is embedded in a crescent moon
A crescent moon nestled in a golden cross.
Three images of diametrically opposed religions
like Russian dolls
Comforting. Soothing. Caressing
Each other.
In the heart of brick lane. In 1999

Today, I went back
To survey my student memories
A melancholy air.
Shrouded the derelict building
Now. Is this a metaphor
Noir. For the state of my town?

Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Nevertheless my heart is heavy.
My brick lane is vapoured.
In its place
Stands a derilict building
Tomorrow is another day.
A sunny one, I hope.
