Moment Poem

Jared Cziko

Driving across the seven mile bridge,
In the mosquito filled, hot Florida Keys.
A small truck, driven by my brother’s friend
And him at his side.
I sit in the back, stories and jokes are shared between us.
Our hair gets messy from the salty breeze
Being cast through our windows.
The vehicle continues to move along with many others,
All moving as if they were a colony of ants.
The truck pulls up to a small beach that was off to the side of the road,
Coming to a stop which jerks me a little, and the seat belt leaves a red mark.
We laugh and enjoy the scenery.
The waves move above the water,
Crashing into the tall pillars.
A trickle of sweat rolls down my temple,
I feel the drip, it being sensitive as a toddler’s emotions.
Staring into the blue water,
I start to snap back to reality and take in everything else.
If I hadn’t broken my gaze, I would have released myself
To the bright, blue water that churns beneath.
The smell of dried seaweed fills the air as get out.
We stand in the shallow water at a local beach in Key West,
Smathers Beach.
The sun casts rays of heat along with the breeze as the day starts to end.
