Kenya October 2008
What can a Kenyan woman
Carry on her head? The whole World
I’m sure –
and more.
Atlas, thou art Kenyan woman
In bright orange dress
Soft ebony skin
An infant on your back
Besides
You carry the whole
Country – sew, cook, clean,
And carry:
Water
Bundle of sticks
Bag of fodder –
I even saw you carry bricks!
Your hips sway
Back as straight
As stalk of maize
Sunday morning
A small crowd
Gathers, late
You carry the rhythm
The tune, you smile
And sing praises:
Asante sana, Bwana!
Thank you so much, Lord!
On Monday morning
The world
Waits to be carried
Water
Sticks
Fodder
Bricks
