Deadwood

Michael Magee

In Kevin Costner's "Midnight Star"
people go to photograph the photos
of "Bull Durham" see the uniform
he wore in "Dancing With Wolves."

We see Kevin the bull snake
posing on a rusted box in the sun
who came here two weeks ago
and never left except for shade.

We walk brick streets of Deadwood
long after Wild Bill Hickock met his mark
buried up on the ridge still holding his
Dead Man's Hand of Aces and 8's
next to Calamity Jane.

Downtown, there's the Gold Dust
and Cadillac Gaming Saloons and a place
where they re-enact the trial of Jack McCall
who put the hammer down on Bill.

Meanwhile, Kevin's still here
flat in the sun and Costner hasn't
been here since 2012, an absentee
landlord with a lot of bankroll.

While the girls on the streetcorner
left over form the brothels are
gaming the house, sick and tired
of walking these dead-end streets.
