There are men in the village of Erith
Whom nobody seeth or heareth,
And there looms on the marge
Of the river a barge,
Which nobody roweth or steereth.
The village of Erith on the south bank of the River Thames, is now just one more tiny part of the spreading metropolis of Greater London.
