Schoolyard at Dusk

Aldo Kraas

The schoolyard is wide and long,

And in the uncertain light of eight o'clock

The pavement flows whitely. So much white pavement

Moving in dusk and empty now.

Thick rows of trees meet the whiteness

Firmly at both sides and shape its restlessness

With shadows that are gentle and steady;

And the whiteness, so empty now,

Flows into shadows,

Flows into blackness,

And I am frightened in this schoolyard

At eight o'clock.
