AND I WILL BE A BLACKNESS ON A LITTLE SQUARE OF GOLD

Robert Clairmont

In an evening

A sun will be a golden ball

Floating low

Over harbor;

And a light of a sun

Will come in my window

And make a square of golden color

On a wall.

And I will stand in a sun

And I will be a blackness on a little square of gold;

And I will look

And I will say,

"How nice!"

And I will look from my window

And I will see great buildings standing proud and high across a water

And I will see many windows and many sides of gold

And I will say,

"How nice!"

And then a sun will sink and far, far away on high

I will see the tops of melancholy mountains dim with burning gold;

And I will look again

And I will say again,

"How nice!"
