Los Angeles After The Rain

David Kowalczyk

Long past beautiful,
not even nice,
remarkably timid,
yet still amazing,
tragic and hilarious,
penguins try to fly
in Echo Park.

Their deaths will be forgotten
almost as certainly
as their births.

They own no heavens.
In 1968, they were evicted
from hell.

All they will ever
know is the furious hunger
of their deluded passions.

The sun
fractured by
the dark dreams
of the moon.
