John Wilson was born in Paisley and studied at Glasgow University and Magdelen College, Oxford. He also wrote under the pen name "Christopher North". He was one of the "Lake Poets", along with Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey and others. John Wilson held the post of Professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University for more than 30 years.
