The administrator and poet John Hay was born in Salem Indiana and studied at Brown University. He grew up in Warsaw, Illinois and became a lawyer. John Hay was Private Secretary to President Lincoln and later his biographer. He was also Secretary of State under President McKinley and President Roosevelt. It was John Hay who secured the Panama Canal for the USA by treaty.
