Bryan Waller Procter was born in Leeds and educated at Harrow School (a contemporary of Lord Byron). He worked as a lawyer and wrote poetry, plays and biographies under the pen-name "Barry Cornwall". He had numerous literary friends including William Lisle Bowles, Robert Browning, Charles Lamb and Coventry Patmore.
