Bernard Barton was born in London, but spent most of the rest of his life in Suffolk, being educated in Ispwich and then living in Woodbridge. He was a friend of Robert Southey amongst other literary figures of the day and his daughter married Edward Fitzgerald, the great translator of Omar Khayyam.
