Iin 1871 he travelled to Spain where he studied in Madrid and Zaragoza, graduating in Canonical Law. Marti then returned the Americas, but was banned from entering Cuba, settling instead in Mexico and Guatemala as his revolutionary activity increased. For more than 20 years he travelled the Americas from the USA to Venezuela drumming up support for the revolution. In 1895 he returned to Cuba and was killed in battle with Spanish forces. Marti's writings had helped inspire and sustain the independence movement and Cuba gained formal independence from Spain in 1902.
