Andrew Lang was born in Selkirk and studied at St Andrews and then at perhaps the most illustrious academic institution in the known world, Balliol College Oxford. He subsequently became a fellow at Merton College, Oxford. He wrote history and poetry and is renowned for his collections of folklore and legends.
