Poems by Fanny Kemble (1809 - 1893)

Fanny Kemble was born into a theatrical family and lived in England and France. She became an actress and married an American who inherited some Southern plantations complete with many hundreds of slaves. The situation of the slaves shocked Fanny and she became set against slavery - her views contributing to her divorce in 1849. She returned to the stage after her divorce, but remained an anti-slavery activist. She remarried in 1871 and returned to England in 1877.
