Poems by Oliver Goldsmith (c. 1730 - 1774)
Oliver Goldsmith was born either in County Roscommon or County Longford around 1730. Son of an Anglican Curate, he studied theology at Trinity College Dublin without much passion. Later he moved to London and studied medicine. He never practiced as a doctor, working as an apothecary and journalist. He was a friend of Doctor Samuel Johnson and Horace Walpole, who called him the "inspired idiot". At one stage Glodsmith wanted to emigrate to America, but missed his ship.
